Junior High Program

Welcome to Junior High at CKCS!

Junior High @ 1:33 minutes

At CKCS, our Junior High students play an integral part of our student body. They are not only the leaders in our building, but are given many unique opportunities to grow and learn as young adults in a smaller-school environment.

Academics

At CKCS, we focus on offering a high quality program to our Junior High students. We follow the Alberta Program of Studies. Click here for an overview on what is taught in each grade.

Students are required to enrol in:

  • Language Arts
  • Math
  • Science (access to a full science lab)
  • Social Studies
  • Physical Education
  • Religion
  • Health
  • Leadership
  • CTF

In addition, students have a "flex" period worked into their schedule every week to give additional work time.

Our school year is not "semestered" which allows more time for learning to happen gradually.  The month of June is set aside to review all content before final exams at the end of the year in core subjects.

A weekly "Homework Tutorial" is also offered after school where JH students can stay to catch up on school work, study or receive additional support from subject teachers.

Parents and students can monitor grades and assignment completion through PowerSchool.  We also host two Parent-Teacher Interviews throughout the school year.  And of course, we have an open door policy where parents can reach out to Homeroom Teachers at any time with questions or concerns through our Remind app.

We are one-to-one in technology and therefore each JH student has a Chromebook assigned to them for the year that they can use to complete school work.

CTF (Option) Classes

CTF (formerly known as Options) is designed with the student in mind.  "CTF is designed to allow students in grades 5 to 9 to explore their interests, passions and skills while making personal connections to career possibilities through meaningful learning experiences made possible through engaging challenges based on the occupational areas" (https://albertactf.ca).

At CKCS, we offer a list of 25+ option choices (including Industrial Arts). The JH student body chooses 6 each year, in which they participate in 3 of.  As it is driven by student interest, the options offered every year are often different!  This means by the time a JH student leaves CKCS after Grade 9, they will have had the opportunity to experience 9 different study areas.  CTF courses are taught by a range of subject teachers and community members who are experienced in the required fields.

The CTF Trailer arrives every year and allows CKCS students to participate in many different Industrial Arts options.

Leadership Class

Students are required to attend Leadership class every week. In Leadership class, students participate in:

  • Planning, organizing and implementing school-wide activities for younger students (i.e. CKCS Talent Show)
  • Establishing and developing relationships within the Stettler community to exercise leadership opportunities
  • 10 hours of volunteer hours a year
  • Designing an online portfolio
  • Career exploration and educational planning (Grade 9)

Extra-Curricular & Clubs

We have a range of extra-curricular clubs and sports teams that JH students can participate in.  Click here to see what is all offered at CKCS!

Junior High Trips

In addition to regular local field trips, our Junior Highs get to attend three 3-day trips each year, including:

  • Leadership Camp in the Fall
  • Skiing/Snowboarding in the mountains in the Winter
  • Camping in the Spring

Although these trips can range in price, students are given many opportunities to fundraise to offset the cost throughout the year.  In many cases, students are able to pay for their entire trips.
